Lakeside Unveils New Wellbeing Room

New Wellbeing Room designed in partnership with NHS midwives

A first for the city’s business community

Portsmouth business campus transforms forgotten storage cupboard into wellness and breastfeeding suite.

Lakeside has unveiled a new Wellbeing Room that sets a new standard for workplace inclusivity in the region.

The room was designed in partnership with Bournemouth University’s midwifery department, which is based on the Lakeside campus and holds coveted UNICEF Gold accreditation under the Baby Friendly Initiative, the highest possible standard for supporting infant feeding and maternal wellbeing.

The room has also been designed as a space for individuals requiring first aid and anyone in need of a moment of quiet restoration. The result is a space that offers a medical-grade reclining chair, a dedicated lockable fridge for expressed milk, full handwashing facilities, clinical-grade fittings, soft lighting and a lockable door for complete privacy – all within a carefully designed, calming environment.

Chloe Johnson, who works at the Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, based on site and is also a frequent user of the wellbeing room, said: “I really appreciate the effort Lakeside has put into the space, especially taking recommendations from midwives and real mums – it really shows. As a mum going back to work, having access to the wellbeing room has made a real difference. The environment is comfortable and safe to express and store milk. It removes a significant barrier many mothers face when coming back to work and helps make that transition feel much more manageable. It’s also great to see the room designed as a multi purpose well being space, supporting not just parents but anyone who may need a quiet or medical space, with its accessible location adding an extra layer of reassurance.”

The project was led by Rahim Ahmed, Facilities Manager at Lakeside, who oversaw the technical conversion of a constrained former storage space into a fully compliant, multi-use clinical room meeting CQC and NHS-style compliance standards.

“It involved the strategic transformation of an underutilised space into a fully compliant, purpose-built clinical space,” said Rahim. “The design approach focused on maximising a constrained footprint – ensuring the room meets compliance requirements without compromising functionality or user experience. This truly reflects Lakeside’s ongoing commitment to excellence.”

Dr Hazel Spencer, Lecturer in Bournemouth University’s Midwifery department, said: “Creating safe, supportive environments is essential for the health and wellbeing of new mothers. Spaces like this play a vital role not only in enabling infant feeding, but in fostering a sense of dignity, privacy and calm. It’s encouraging to see Lakeside embracing these principles.”

The Wellbeing Room is part of a broader investment in the campus. Lakeside has also completed a modernisation of its washroom facilities and upgraded its conference spaces, which can now host events for up to 250 guests with state-of-the-art presentation technology.

Simon Bateman, Asset Manager at Lakeside North Harbour, said: The transformation of what was once an unused storage area into a fully equipped Wellbeing Room is something we’re particularly proud of. This is about creating an environment where people feel supported, comfortable and able to perform at their best.”

The Wellbeing Room is available to all workers, students and visitors to the campus.

New Public Transport Strategy Published

Portsmouth City Council publishes new Public Transport Strategy

Public Transport Strategy for 2026–2040 published

We understand the importance of getting to work and back, making it an easy and safe process, and want to share the new Transport Strategy with our Occupiers.

Portsmouth City Council has published its Public Transport Strategy for 2026–2040, setting out a long‑term plan to make travelling in and around the city faster, easier and greener for everyone.

Formally adopted by the council last month, the strategy is now available on the council’s website for residents, businesses and partners to explore.

This forward-looking strategy supports the wider City Vision for 2040 and the council’s goals for cleaner air, easier travel and better connections for communities. It outlines how Portsmouth will improve bus, rail, ferry and taxi travel to support a city where public transport is a convenient, reliable and attractive choice for more people.

Key aims of the strategy include:

  • Faster and more reliable bus services within Portsmouth and to neighbouring areas through the South East Hampshire Rapid Transit network,  supported by additional bus priority schemes coming forward through the Bus Service Improvement Plan
  • Working with transport operators and government to promote improved rail and ferry connections, including more frequent services, better stations and connectivity and more affordable fares
  • Modern, accessible infrastructure, including new bus shelters with live bus times and transport hubs that allow people to easily switch between different modes of transport
  • A greener transport network, with ambitions for a fully zero‑emission bus fleet
  • A safer and more inclusive system, with improvements to accessibility and personal security across all public transport options

Cllr Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport, said:

“This strategy sets out a bold but achievable plan for transforming how people travel in Portsmouth. Public transport is vital to our city’s future by supporting easier and more convenient travel, improving air quality and helping us meet our climate goals. I’m delighted to see this important strategy published, and I look forward to working with our partners and communities to bring its ambitions to life.”

Richard Soper, speaking on behalf of the South Hampshire Bus Operators’ Association (SHBOA), said:

“We welcome this new Portsmouth policy. It shows a clear vision that puts community wellbeing first. Growing public and shared transport, alongside more walking and cycling, is essential to improving life and supporting growth sustainably.

“We’re pleased to see bus use rising. Faster, more reliable journeys encourage more people to travel by bus, reduce traffic, and support investment in cleaner, zero‑emission vehicles that improve Portsmouth’s air quality.

“Operators are commercial businesses, but we work together where it helps passengers. Our joint SolentGo mobile ticketing is one example of making travel easier across the region.”

The document also includes an action plan showing how improvements will be delivered in the short, medium and long term, with clear commitments to investment, partnership working and regular monitoring.

Residents and stakeholders can now read the full Public Transport Strategy 2026–2040 online here.

All Aboard the Apprenticeship Bus!

National Apprenticeship Week

Bus Tour Around Portsmouth

Portsmouth’s 2026 Apprenticeship Bus is hitting the streets from Tuesday 10th to Friday 13th February, bringing apprentice ambassadors and volunteers directly to students in the city.

Now in its seventh year, the Shaping Portsmouth initiative, delivered in partnership with local businesses and sponsors, invites apprentices from a wide range of industries to share their first-hand career experiences with Year 10 and 11 students.

Two apprentices from Lakeside, Gemma Abraham and Asia Torr, will be on the road for a two-day visit to secondary schools across Portsmouth to promote apprenticeship opportunities and their benefits.

During National Apprenticeship Week, the tour provides young people with an engaging, face to face look at the diverse paths available beyond traditional academic routes, helping them make informed decisions about their future careers.

In previous tours, hundreds of students have had the chance to meet passionate apprentices, with nearly eight in ten pupils reporting they were inspired to consider an apprenticeship after taking part.

Gemma Abraham is currently completing a Level 3 Multichannel Marketing apprenticeship and has praised the programme for its clear structure, practical focus and positive impact on her new role.

She transitioned from the Workplace Experience team into a new role as a Marketing Apprentice last year at Lakeside, motivated by personal growth and inspired by the career journeys of colleagues. Gemma started the 18 month apprenticeship programme in 2025.

Gemma Abraham, Marketing Executive added:

“I’ve really enjoyed the apprenticeship so far. The learning is clear, practical and easy to apply, and the regular check ins with my digital learning coach have really helped me stay organised and confident.

“The research and planning module I’m working on now has helped me understand how good preparation leads to stronger marketing campaigns, and I’m already using what I’ve learned to support campaigns, improve content planning and communicate more effectively. It’s made me more confident in sharing ideas and contributing to the team.”

Asia Torr joined as a Customer Service Apprentice, working in the Workplace Experience team at Lakeside while undertaking a Level 3 apprenticeship with HTP Apprenticeship College. In her day to day role, Asia welcomes visitors and occupiers, manages meeting room bookings, and ensures that events and meetings run smoothly, including catering and technical setup.

Throughout the apprenticeship, Asia has benefited from structured training and hands on learning, including shadowing sessions with managers and colleagues. This has helped build confidence and enabled her to take on more responsibilities.

Asia Torr, Customer Service Apprentice said:

“The apprenticeship has been incredibly stimulating. From the onboarding process to the support from my team, I’ve felt welcomed and set up for success from the very start.

“Balancing full time work with off the job training has been challenging but extremely rewarding. I’ve been able to apply what I learn straight away – whether that’s improving the customer experience, working more efficiently or handling complex situations with greater confidence. I’m really looking forward to continuing the programme and building on everything I’ve learned so far.”

 Simon Bateman, Asset Manager said:

“It’s fantastic to see both Gemma and Asia grow with Lakeside.

“They bring great energy, creativity, and enthusiasm to the team. It’s exciting to see talent growing within the business, and both appointments are part of a wider focus on nurturing careers, expanding our capabilities, and delivering even more value to our occupiers.”

Meon Capital Move To Lakeside

Lakeside Welcomes Capital Management Firm

Lakeside North Harbour has announced a new lettings agreement with Meon Capital, a fund management firm based in Portsmouth.

The company currently manages its flagship global equity fund, the IFSL Meon Adaptive Growth Fund and is preparing to expand its fund range with the introduction of new fund strategies with the addition of a dedicated US equity fund, together with a long/short absolute return global equity strategy.

The new office will play a crucial role in supporting the business to grow, providing the space and infrastructure needed for the company’s continued development.

Lakeside’s strong transport links further support the firm’s operations. Its proximity to the M27 motorway and easy access to the A3 offer direct road routes to London, while a train journey takes just over an hour.

This connectivity is especially valuable given that many of Meon Capital’s existing clients are based in the south of the UK. The company’s client base is growing nationally, with an increasing number of overseas clients.

Simon Bateman, Asset Manager at Lakeside North Harbour, said: “Lakeside is getting the attention of businesses in need of modern space to continue to deliver exceptional service and to have the room to focus on growth. Meon Capital’s move to the campus is a reflection of this.

“We help businesses shape the future of work. We are pleased to have Robert and his team at Lakeside on board and look forward to supporting them and the business as they continue to succeed”.

Robert Hale, Fund Manager and Director at Meon Capital, added: “Our move to Lakeside is a significant step forward. The new office elevates our professional image, supports growth, and serves as a well-connected hub.

“Lakeside gives us the environment to provide demonstrations of our unique systematic process led approach to managing equity portfolios, while providing the focus and space to drive our broader business strategy.

“We look forward to leveraging Lakeside’s facilities to expand our fund offerings and strengthen relationships with clients across the UK and overseas.”

Lakeside offers a stunning rural setting, alongside a 19-acre lake with woodland and an abundance of outdoor space.
