Student Visit

City of Portsmouth College

Tour and Presentation

Insight for Business Students into Real-World Site Operations

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting a group of 16-18-year-old business students and their lecturer Neil Hudson, from City of Portsmouth College, one of our local training academies, here at Lakeside. The students, eager to experience the professional environment, were keen to see first-hand what it’s really like to work on a dynamic business campus like ours.

As part of their business course, the students are studying essential topics like marketing, health and safety, and sustainability in business. These areas are critical to understanding how modern companies operate, and we were thrilled to provide them with a comprehensive look at how we manage our site and integrate these principles into our daily operations.

The visit kicked off with a warm welcome and presentations from key members of our team:

  • Ian Cox, Senior Estate Manager
  • Fabiha Hussain, Facilities Co-ordinator
  • Emma Parkin, Marketing Manager

Each team member provided valuable insights into their respective areas of responsibility, covering everything from facility management to the importance of sustainable practices in our operations, along with how we promote the campus which included showing the students our new Lakeside Video.

After the presentations, the students were taken on a guided tour of the campus, where they had the opportunity to explore our wide range of facilities and amenities available to those working at the site. It was a great chance for the students to see how a well-managed business environment operates on a day-to-day basis and how each department plays a role in ensuring smooth, sustainable operations.

The visit was a fantastic opportunity to engage with the local community and support the students as they take important steps toward their future careers. We hope that by sharing our knowledge and experience, we’ve helped them make connections between their coursework and real-world applications.

At Lakeside, we’re committed to fostering local talent and providing opportunities for the next generation of business professionals to learn, grow, and succeed. We look forward to more collaborations like this one and wish all the students the best of luck as they continue on their educational journey!

Welcome to the Midwives!

Bournemouth University move their midwife training to Lakeside

Bournemouth University have created a new midwifery teaching base at Lakeside

Welcome to our new occupiers Bournemouth University, who will use their space in Building 1000, as an intimate learning environment for the Midwifery and Health Sciences department, allowing students to gain first hand knowledge from fifteen academic midwives teaching and researching in the department.

When enrolling, students have the choice to study out of either the Bournemouth campus or the new Portsmouth midwifery campus, offering a learning opportunity for those who live in and around Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight, and southern Hampshire.

With the midwifery course being an equal balance of theory and practice, the new space at Lakeside also benefits from closer links to the nearby Queen Alexandra hospital where students undertake practice learning placements and gain real world experience through interactions with women, families, fellow midwives and other health professionals.

Simon Bateman, Asset Manager at Lakeside North Harbour, said:

“I am proud to welcome Bournemouth University’s midwifery department to Lakeside and am inspired that we can use our space to create a positive impact for the local and national health sector.

“For the students and staff, who may split their time between Lakeside and the nearby QA hospital, as well as Isle of Wight and Hampshire Hospitals, the campus’ flexible, thriving and supportive work environment will surely match their needs perfectly and hope they thoroughly enjoy what we have to offer.”

Dr Catherine Angell, Associate Professor and Head of the Department For Midwifery and Health Sciences at Bournemouth University, said:

“We feel that Lakeside North Harbour is an ideal location for our midwifery students in Portsmouth to be based. The site has a strong ‘campus atmosphere’ with coffee shops, plenty of green space and a shuttle bus service into the nearby city centre, making for an inviting place to study.

“It is no secret that the UK has suffered from a chronic shortage of midwives in the past, so we’re committed to creating a positive and encouraging environment for our students to learn. We firmly believe Lakeside gives us that platform to grow and empower the next generation of midwives.”

It is estimated that England has a shortage of around 2,500 midwives and the NHS has recently looked to expand its routes into the profession to create more opportunities for students from all backgrounds and increase retention.

Bournemouth University courses are validated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and accredited by Unicef UK Baby Friendly Initiative with the Gold Award for achieving the Baby-Friendly sustainability standards.

Managing Director of the Lakeside Cleaning Crew

Meet the Manager…

Introducing Antoni Dimitrov, Managing Director of Eco Drift Commercial Cleaning, who are the company responsible for keeping Lakeside clean.

Who are you and tell us more about your business?

My name is Antoni Dimitrov, and I am the Managing Director of Eco Drift Commercial Cleaning. Our journey began in 2010 when I launched Eco Drift, initially as a Waterless Car Wash, driven by a deep passion for sustainability. Over the years, this passion evolved into a commitment to redefine commercial cleaning through eco-friendly practices, cutting-edge technology, and a relentless focus on quality.

Today, Eco Drift is at the forefront of the industry, integrating IoT sensors, cobots, and our proprietary Shiftomate® smart technology to deliver unparalleled cleaning services. Our mission is simple: to transform every space we touch into an immaculate, sustainable environment.

We are proud to call ourselves ‘Curators of Clean Spaces,’ a title that reflects our dedication to providing reliable, transparent service that exceeds expectations. Our close-knit company culture fosters pride, ownership, and direct access to leadership, which is key to our high employee retention and the consistent delivery of exceptional results.

What are you responsible for at Lakeside?

Eco Drift is honoured to be the cleaning service provider for Lakeside North Harbour, one of our most valuable clients. I personally oversee the operations here, ensuring that our team of 16 dedicated professionals maintain the highest standards of cleanliness across communal areas and customer spaces. Being on-site allows me to engage directly with both our team and clients, ensuring our services are perfectly aligned with their needs.

How does your work link with sustainability on-site?

At Eco Drift, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations and those of our clients, including Lakeside. Our daily cleaning routines utilize highly efficient, eco-friendly products that help to lower Scope 3 emissions.

Beyond our cleaning practices, we are actively involved in sustainability initiatives on-site, such as the Coffee Paper Cup recycling scheme. This project is part of our broader effort to reduce waste and promote recycling, tackling the issue of disposable cup waste head-on. We’ve also invested in tree planting on-site, further contributing to the reduction of our carbon footprint and that of Lakeside. Additionally, we’re exploring new avenues around waste management on-site, continually seeking innovative ways to enhance our environmental impact.

What are your future plans?

Looking ahead, we are exploring additional ways to enhance sustainability at Lakeside through innovative consultancy services and new initiatives aimed at further reducing emissions. Our ultimate goal is to achieve Net Zero within the next five years.

As a runner-up in the Net Zero Journey of the Year category at the Big Sustainability Awards 2023 and a finalist in the News Business Excellence Awards 2023, we are eager to share our experiences and insights with our partners and clients to accelerate the achievement of common sustainability goals.

Additionally, we are expanding our efforts in recycling and upcycling waste on-site. This year, we’ve also made a commitment to donate 1% of our revenue to 1% for the Planet, supporting environmental organizations that are driving positive change.

Specifically, we have backed the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, contributing to their Seagrass Restoration project in the Solent and Chalk Streams restoration in Hampshire—two initiatives that hold immense potential for habitat restoration and CO2 sequestration.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

Beyond my professional life, I’m a keen triathlete, passionate about human performance and data analytics. This passion for data and performance directly influences the way we conduct business at Eco Drift—we harness the power of sensors and smart technology to continually enhance our operations.

Additionally, I enjoy playing the guitar with the Lakeside band, Lakestock, which adds a fun and creative dimension to my time at Lakeside.

Anything else you’d like to mention?

Lakeside North Harbour is more than just a place of work for us—it’s a community. We’ve formed priceless friendships here and met amazing people who have enriched our journey. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be a part of this vibrant and special place.

Lunchtime Learning

Finding out how to fish!

With The Portsmouth & District Angling Society

Exploring the Art of Angling with the Portsmouth & District Angling Society

At Lakeside North Harbour, we’re committed to creating a vibrant community where learning and engagement are part of our everyday experience. Today was a testament to that commitment as we welcomed the Portsmouth & District Angling Society to our Business Campus, offering our community a unique opportunity to dive into the world of angling.

During a special lunchtime session, members of the Society, Steve, Alan, Nev, and Rod (yes, that’s his real name!), graciously shared their passion, knowledge, and skills with us. Their expertise shone through as they introduced us to the diverse fish species that inhabit our beautiful 19 acre lake, including carp, roach, rudd and there’s even a catfish in the lake who goes by the name Colin, named by the Society’s regulars.

This event was more than just a fun way to spend a lunch hour; it was an educational experience that connected our community with nature in a meaningful way. The Society members not only showcased the art of fishing but also highlighted their ongoing efforts to manage and preserve the fish stock in the lake, ensuring a balanced ecosystem for the future.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Steve, Alan, Nev, and Rod for joining us today and for their continued stewardship of our aquatic life. It’s events like these that make our campus not just a place to work, but a place to grow and connect.

Here’s to many more learning adventures and community experiences at Lakeside!
